Bran’s story till season 5 of Game of Thrones was not particularly engaging, in fact a lot of fans found it dull. The fact that while so many events were taking place in Westeros, Bran had only managed to walk up to a tree in the wilderness of the north was not very entertaining. However the recent events in season 6 have suddenly turned Bran’s story into one of the most awaited in the series.

Bran, as we saw is able to see into the past with the help of the three-eyed raven. We got to see a young Lyanna through Bran’s eyes and of course a talking Hodor! (See why does Hodor says Hodor) In the third episode we also got to see the event which fans have been waiting for with bated breaths- the Tower of Joy scene. The best moment of the scene was when Bran realized that people from the past could actually hear him call out to them. This certainty gives way to a major possibility – Could the three eyed raven be the reason why Aerys went mad?

The Three Eyed Raven

But first we need to know who the three eyed raven is- The three eyed raven is actually Brynden Rivers, also called Bloodraven. He was a legitimized Great Bastard of Aegon IV Targaryen. Brynden was a Targaryen loyalist during the Blackfyre Rebellions, the Hand of Aerys I and Maekar I Targaryen, and Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. It was said that he disappeared while ranging beyond the Wall at one point of time.

The fact that one can communicate with people during time travel must certainly be known to the three eyed raven as well and maybe that is why the raven prevented Bran from lingering too long within a memory. So it is very possible that the raven was in fact the reason why the mad king went mad and now is just trying to stop Bran from making the same mistakes.

Brynden being a Targaryen could have possibly tried to reach out to Aerys II. It is said that the mad king often heard voices telling him ‘to burn them all’. It could be the raven asking him to burn the dead because he knows what the white walkers can do. However it did not end too well for the raven as Aerys ended up killing innocent people so that is perhaps the reason why the raven does not want Bran becoming too attached to a memory.

Major role for Bran ahead

This being said, it is a certainty that Bran would be playing a major role in changing the future of Westeros. After learning about the white walkers history and origin through flashbacks he could reach out to Jon and help him fight them. The trailer of the next episode sure looks very promising in terms of Bran’s storyline. If you haven’t watched it yet, now is a good time!
